For Leila, the main character of “The Orphan Sky,” music is an escape- both emotionally and physically. Her talent as a musician is what ultimately takes her out of communist Azerbaijan and lands her in California. Her creator, first-time author Ella Leya, shares a similar story. Kojo talks with Leya about the rarely-explored setting of Azerbaijan and how music influenced her life and writing.
