Last month, Pennsylvania’s attorney general released a shocking report about widespread abuse within the Roman Catholic Church in his state. The report also implicated Washington’s current cardinal, Archbishop Donald Wuerl, who previously served as bishop of the diocese of Pittsburgh, where he established a reputation as one of the more forward thinkers within the church responding to the abuse scandal.

Now, a growing chorus of local Catholics –lay people and priests alike– hope Pope Francis will accept his resignation.
