Data center

Known as the data center capital of the United States, northern Virginia is home to many industrial facilities that store data for tech companies. Loudoun County, for example, claims that 70 percent of the world’s internet traffic passes through the jurisdiction. While data centers have been touted for bringing tax revenue and skilled jobs to the region, they’ve been criticized for not creating enough jobs and for requiring a huge amount of energy to operate. We look at the economic and environmental effects of data centers in the region.
