High school graduation rates in our region have surged in recent years with gains in Virginia, Maryland and the District. Though the numbers are encouraging, the debate over how well a diploma prepares graduates for college and careers rages more intensely than ever. Now, a new study analyzing 93 diploma options across the country shows that 20 states don’t offer a diploma that requires students to meet minimum English and math standards. Kojo explores the gaps in graduation requirements, finds out how they impact students down the road, and learns how one local system is rethinking routes through high school.
