High school graduation rates in our region have surged in recent years with gains in Virginia, Maryland and the District. Though the numbers are encouraging, the debate over how well a diploma prepares graduates for college and careers rages more intensely than ever. Now, a new study analyzing 93 diploma options across the country shows that 20 states don’t offer a diploma that requires students to meet minimum English and math standards.
