Changing an Institution: The U.S. Postal Service

We talk with Postmaster General John Potter about the drastic cuts he proposes for the U.S. Postal Service.

The U.S. Postal Service has been a self-supporting, independent agency since 1972, but the current financial crisis may threaten that model. With drastic cuts ahead -- including a proposal to end Saturday mail delivery -- we talk with Postmaster General John Potter about the future of the U.S. Postal Service.

People are not writing letters anymore. They prefer to send emails and then with one click of a button they disappears. On occasion, I still carefully pull out the letters from my Mom and Dad that they wrote to me long ago that I will cherish forever. Just as important are love letters written by sweethearts and lovers who marched off to war. Letters become precious memories from the past. Those of us who have experiences the loss of a loved one through the tragedy of Alzheimer's disease will reach for these treasures written by our loved one and hold on tight to these memories. I urge everyone to please slow down and take the time to write these precious letters to the ones you love. Let's go back to using the mail and perhaps Mr. Potter wouldn't be faced with making these drastic changes that will affect us all. Help save the U.S. Postal Service.
