Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are small housing units that homeowners sometimes build for relatives or to make extra income by renting it out. They can be basement or attic apartments, apartments over garages, or freestanding backyard cottages, sometimes called mother-in-law houses or granny units. As they become more popular around the region, questions have been raised over how to regulate their construction. We take a look at ADUs, where they fit into the larger question of affordable housing and how some jurisdictions can be more welcoming to them than others.
