In response to a controversial ad proposed by the group that recently hosted the “Draw Muhammed” cartoon contest in Texas, Metro has banned all “issue ads” from public transit until at least the end of the year. It’s not the first time Metro and other transit systems have struggled with the line between free speech and provocative content, and New York and Philadelphia are facing similar challenges. But civil liberties groups note that courts have generally come down on the side of the First Amendment. We explore the issues.
