Privacy International condemned Yahoo after it gave the Chinese government information about journalist Shi Tao’s personal email account. He was subsequently imprisoned for 10 years for writing about the Tiananmen Square protests. Yahoo says it was only following Chinese law. Do you think US-based tech companies are obligated to turn over information to authoritarian governments?
(5%) A. Yahoo is right — a corporation’s only responsibility is to seek profits.
(12%) B. Yahoo is right — we should not impose our values on other cultures; US corporations should follow the local customs and laws.
(37%) C. Yahoo is wrong — The “I was just following orders” defense was discredited long ago. The responsible Yahoo managers should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity.
(46%) D. Right or wrong, it is personally repulsive to me — I will avoid doing business with companies that cooperate with authoritarian regimes and sustain injustice.
