Blossoms Off The Beaten Path: A Guide To D.C.’s Flowering Trees
Love Washington’s cherry blossoms, but hate the crowds they draw?
Tourists may love the spectacular blooms around the Tidal Basin, but many locals have their own favorite spots for enjoying cherry blossoms, as well as dozens of other spring flowers.
This was the topic for a segment on Thursday’s The Kojo Nnamdi Show, which you can listen to here.
Here are some places off the beaten path where you can get your annual blossom fix far away from port-a-potties and other people.
Dumbarton Oaks, Georgetown
Come for the slope of Cherry Hill, stay for the solitude.
U.S. National Arboretum, NE Washington D.C.
At the 446-acre arboretum, the best view is above your head.
Stanton Park, Capitol Hill
Awaiting a train? Take the 10-minute walk from Union Station to this gorgeous line of trees.
Hains Point, SW Washington D.C.
Bike to the southern tip of East Potomac Park and bask in the glory of spring. (But also maybe take allergy medication first.)
Kenwood, Bethesda
Cherry Blossoms without the city hassle.
Brookside Gardens, Wheaton
I mean, it’s 50 acres of gardens.
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens, Vienna
Cherry trees galore. But be sure to check out the daffodils near Woods Gazebo.
Green Spring Gardens, Alexandria
It’s all in the name.
