The event many feared (hoped?) might never come is upon us. Harper Lee, beloved author of “To Kill a Mockingbird” is set to release another novel, “Go Set A Watchman.” Readers got a sneak peek of the first chapter last Friday and early reviews have some concerned about the racial bigotry of Atticus Finch, heretofore one of American literature’s most beloved figures.

Before we all panic and freak out TOO much, it’s probably wise to read ‘Go Set a Watchman,’ which will hit stores tomorrow, or tonight at midnight.

The area’s indie bookstores are ready for you if you’re eager to get your hands on a copy and decide for yourself what to make of all the kerfuffle.

Upshur Street Books in Petworth plans to project the film version of ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ on loop the day of release and will have balloons and posters, and big ‘Go Set a Watchman’ display front and center. Manager Anna Thorn has no official plans for extra hours, but will stay open later if there’s evident demand.

Eileen McGervey, owner of One More Page in Arlington reports dozens of pre-orders and said she expects people will pick it up early and then go home to read.  Noting that when J.K. Rowling’s first book for adults, ‘The Casual Vacancy’ came out fans reported they’d taken the day off from work to read it all the way through. So she expects a similar spate of people calling in to work ‘reading.’

For those who want to get their hands on a physical copy at the earliest possible moment there’s Kramerbooks in Dupont Circle. They’re open until 1 a.m. and events manager Sarah Baline confirms the book will go on sale as the clock strikes twelve.  The adjacent cafe makes it a great option for people who want to start reading immediately and need snacks to see them through.

Politics & Prose reports a healthy number of pre-orders for the book from eager customers as well. And last week they mounted a display in the store celebrating the book’s arrival. Including buttons! Events manager Lena Little says anyone ready to dress their totes in the newest Harper Lee fashion should come on over.
