Congressional “Jackbooted Thugs” & Marijuana Legalization: Politics Hour, December 12, 2014

Last night, Congress moved to block the implementation of marijuana legalization in the District. Members of the House of Representatives– led by Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD)– inserted language into a must-pass $1.1 trillion government-funding bill, which would prohibit the city from implementing Initiative 71. On today’s Politics Hour, Kojo highlighted the injustice of Congressional meddling in local affairs, along with some potential unforseen consequences [listen below]:

They’re baaaack! Credit default swaps, derivatives, and that oh-so-familiar feeling— if you pay taxes in the District– of jack-booted thugs, standing on your neck. We can’t breathe, and we definitely shouldn’t be blowing smoke, since Congress declared the city’s marijuana initiative null, void and dead. But who’s complaining? They may think it’s dead, but there’s smoke rising from the coffin. Lots of it. Because since the city will only be prohibited from taxing and regulating marijuana. Turns out pot in DC may be legal and unregulated. What a holiday gift! Thank you Congress. You beat us down, but we may be headed for even higher ground. On the Politics Hour, after the news”
