Beyond "Corporate Social Responsibility"

Beyond "Corporate Social Responsibility"

British Petroleum will long be associated with the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf. But it wasn't so long ago that the company had established itself as a leading proponent of "Corporate Social Responsibility." We examine the future of "sustainable" business models.

Should corporations be concerned with their impact on society? Can "sustainability" be a corporate mission, along with pursuit of profit and shareholder value? The idea of "Corporate Social Responsibility" is taking off among private industry leaders, and states like Maryland are creating new incentives for socially and environmentally conscious corporations. We examine whether the goal of "doing good" is in tension with the necessity of "doing well."
