Surveillance cameras can play an important role in protecting vulnerable landmarks and deterring crimes in local neighborhoods. But recent moves by D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty to consolidate and monitor thousands of pre-existing security cameras dispersed across the District have run into major opposition from local leaders and civil libertarians.
