The Declaration of Independence announced America's coming out to the rest of the world. Its ideals for the right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" were the first of its kind, and other countries took note. Historian David Armitage traces how Vietnam to Southern Rhodesia to New Zealand modeled their declarations after the United States.
