This week, many mourned the passing of legendary director Mike Malone, the co-founder of The Duke Ellington School for the Arts and one of the first African Americans to succeed in Washington’s theater scene. As Jennifer Nelson prepares to retire from her role as artistic director of Washington’s African Continuum Theatre she speaks with Kojo about the way opportunities for black actors, directors, playwrights and others have changed over the past three decades.
