Soldier Deaths During Wartime

Listen Monday, May. 23, 2005 at 1:06 p.m. in Conflict, Society

Why do soldiers risk their lives to recover the remains of fallen comrades? Why does the US military still expend time and money trying to locate soldiers remains from the Korean war, decades after hostilities ended? And what does our treatment of enemy dead in Iraq or Afghanistan say about us? We look at the complicated physical, social, religious, economic, and political issues that affect attitudes toward soldiers who die in wartime.

Audio archives, transcripts and CDs will be available approximately 15 minutes after the program ends.

Guests

Michael Sledge

freelance journalist; also author of "Soldier Dead: How we Recover, Identify, Bury, and Honor our Military Fallen" (Columbia Univ. Press)

Artie Muller

Viet Nam veteran; and Executive Director of "Rolling Thunder"
