School Reform in DC

We go to Columbia Heights to find out how the District's bold school reform efforts are playing out in the classroom and the community.

The District's bold--and in some cases, controversial-- school reform efforts are getting national attention. But how are the changes affecting local schools and neighborhoods? Kojo in your Community talks with parents, teachers and community members about what's on their agenda for improving schools.

I think teacher evaluation is seriously flawed and a school reform is necessary. One of the things I'd change is tenure, I'd get rid of it altogether, not try to change it. I'd redefine the reward system particularly for new teachers. It is common knowledge that it takes 3 - 5 year for a teacher to "find their voice", "hit their stride", "settle into a rhythm". Also, we need to keep learning our whole lives so we need to teach lifelong learning. Aaron DelSignore
