In states and cities across the country -- including the District and Baltimore, it's illegal to discriminate against transgender people. But a law designed to protect transgender individuals in suburban Maryland has sparked a contentious legal battle. We look at evolving cultural attitudes about the transgender community, and explore new scientific research about gender identity.
