Advertising's View of Women & Minorities

Listen Thursday, Mar. 17, 2005 at 12:06 p.m. in Society

Advertising is a powerful social force that commands the public’s attention. But sociologist Tony Cortese says that few people realize the role it plays in shaping and reflecting society’s assumptions about racial conflict and gender inequality. We look at advertising's hidden messages and the way it shapes women and minorities' ideas about their own role in society.

Audio archives, transcripts and CDs will be available approximately 15 minutes after the program ends.

Guests

Anthony Cortese

Professor of Sociology, Southern Methodist University; author of "Provocateur: Images of Women and Minorities in Advertising, Second Edition" (Rowman & Littlefield)

Howard Buford

founder and president, Prime Access Inc., an advertising agency
